Filet of Soul is the first part of the 8th episode of season 2, which first aired on September 3, 1997. In this episode, Dexter and Dee Dee give their pet fish, named Fishy, too many commands. As a result, Fishy suffers from exhaustion and dies. The siblings are then ordered to flush Fishy down the toilet, but after refusal, Fishy comes back as a ghost and haunts them.

Plot[]

On a stormy night, Dexter and Dee Dee are having their pet goldfish Fishy do tricks to help him get some exercise. Soon after, the siblings give Fishy too many commands and Fishy becomes exhausted. When Mom tells them it's time to get ready for bed, Fishy suddenly dies and floats to the surface of his fishbowl.

Dexter, Dee Dee, and Mom look at the deceased goldfish and place a black sheet on him. In the bathroom, Dad tells Dexter and Dee Dee that Fishy is going to the Sewer Beyond, where all deceased pets go when they, as Dee Dee puts it, "run out of batteries." Suddenly, Dad gives Dexter the fishbowl and leaves the bathroom crying. Mom promises to get them a new goldfish in the morning and then tells her children to flush Fishy down the toilet.

Dexter prepares to flush Fishy down the toilet, but Dee Dee stops him as she doesn't want to send Fishy in there. She then leaves the bathroom while pushing Dexter out. Just after leaving, Fishy's soul leaves his body and exits the bathroom. In Dexter's bedroom, he prepares to go to sleep and is startled awake after seeing Fishy's soul. He and Dee Dee race out of their bedrooms and into each other's bedroom back and forth.

Fishy's soul kisses Dee Dee while she teases her brother for being afraid of a ghost, prompting her to tell Dexter to suit up. In Dexter's Apparition Containment inside his laboratory, he gets his Ghost Capture Unit while Dee Dee gets a fishing pole with some paper and scissors. In the hallway, Dexter watches his back as Fishy's soul flies around. He shoots a hole in the ceiling and gets bruised. Later, Dee Dee, dressed as a ghost, tells Dexter that she intends to scare Fishy's soul.

Dexter suddenly gets an idea and races into his room to pull out a pack of Yummy Gummy Worms and attaches one of them to Dee Dee's fishing rod. Fishy's soul notices the gummy worm and chases after it as Dexter reels it in, prompting Dee Dee to catch it with a fishing net. Dexter then fires a laser from his Ghost Capture Unit at Fishy, vacuuming it into the pack itself. Dexter heads back to bed as Dee Dee goes to the bathroom to brush her teeth.

In there, as Dee Dee brushes her teeth, the toilet seat opens up and Dee Dee goes to look inside. Suddenly, she disappears and her toothbrush hits the floor. As Dexter sleeps, Dee Dee's ghostly wails wake him up and he runs to the bathroom to find an apparition of Dee Dee in the running shower. Dexter uses a plunger to pull her out and Dee Dee flushes Fishy's corpse. Shortly after, a tentacle comes out of the toilet and grabs Dee Dee. Dexter then uses the fishing rod to press the "Open" button on his Ghost Capture Unit, releasing Fishy's soul. The soul itself then flies to the bathroom and into the toilet, where Fishy happily departs to the Sewer Beyond and into the afterlife.

Suddenly, Dad opens the bathroom door to remind Dexter and Dee Dee that early morning time is his special privacy time. He suddenly gets a pair of glowing eyes with slit pupils and sharp teeth, then laughs maniacally.

Trivia[]

Cultural References[]

  • Dexter's line "Who you gonna call?!" is a reference to the Ghostbusters film franchise. The device he uses to capture Fishy's soul is based on the Proton Pack.
  • The entire episode is a reference to a 1982 supernatural horror film Poltergeist. Similarly, Dee Dee gets trapped in another dimension much like the character Carol Anne.

Goofs/Errors[]

  • Dexter has a Major Glory action figure in this episode but he didn't have one in the other episodes "Figure Not Included" or "Surprise!"
  • When Dee Dee is first seen barefoot she has 4 toes, but for the rest of the episode she had 3.
  • On the door to the "Apparition Compartment" in Dexter's laboratory, the word "apparition" is misspelled as "aparition".
  • Near the end of the episode, Dee Dee enters the bathroom from the right, but as she was brushing her teeth, the door is in front of the toilet rather than behind it.

Production Notes[]

  • This episode along with "Golden Diskette" were aired on September 3, 1997; they were produced in the same year according to the credits.

  • During the Dexter's Laboratory Top 10 event that aired during Cartoon Network's weekly block Cartoon Cartoon Fridays on August 16, 2002, this episode was number 4.
